Fresh from civilian life recruits form at R and O (Receiving and Outfitting). In a matter of hours civilian appearance will give way to the Navy look. Nine weeks of fast-moving training and indoctrination will transform raw recruits into men of the U.S. Navy.

 

The grimace on this recuit's face is more from expectation than from pain. No longer are shots given with a needle. Used here are high speed guns which force the serum through the skin byh a stream of compressed air. Recruits get thorough medical and dental examinations to make certain they have a prime qualification for the demanding pace of training - good health.

 

The "recruit look" in hair style. The butch haircut or crew-cut makes for a neater, cleaner, more uniform appearance, and is a hallmark of recruit. Haircuts are required weekly during training.
