Fresh
from civilian life recruits form at R and O (Receiving and Outfitting).
In a matter of hours civilian appearance will give way to the Navy
look. Nine weeks of fast-moving training and indoctrination will
transform raw recruits into men of the U.S. Navy. |

The
grimace on this recuit's face is more from expectation than from
pain. No longer are shots given with a needle. Used here are high
speed guns which force the serum through the skin byh a stream of
compressed air. Recruits get thorough medical and dental examinations
to make certain they have a prime qualification for the demanding
pace of training - good health. |

The "recruit look" in hair style. The butch haircut or crew-cut makes for a neater, cleaner, more uniform appearance, and is a hallmark of recruit. Haircuts are required weekly during training.
